
What is henna and what is it used for? – Part 1
Fashion knows henna as naturally coloring of updo and body. Henna has several names in Asia, such as inai, gorintaaku, marudhaani and hina. Originally henna is a plant has Latin name Lawsonia Inermis, but in fashion today people recognize henna in powder form. Henna plant lives in tropical and sub tropical country, also several part of south and north Asia. Henna is used as natural color for coloring updo and painting body.
The used of henna is safety because hennotanic acid does not absorbed by body, in only gives dark brown or red brown or brown color in epidermis. But, dry henna or known as henna powder sometimes contain chemical essences for giving black color effect. Has to be careful to apply henna powder because sometime it is not natural and added by chemical essences then poisoned the users for example with PPD or para-pnenylenediamine which mostly finds in black color dye.
Henna used for shining and protecting the updo from external factors such as ultraviolet and pollution. And by adding with other ingredient, henna used for coloring the hair. For having great color, henna is better to mix with tea or coffee powder, and then add yogurt for oily updo or herbal oil for dry hair. As final touch, add an egg for moisturized and softened the hair. By mixed all of them, the updo will be shined and not dry because already added natural conditioner.
On any celebrations and wedding parties, Indian and Malay (Melayu) people painted their nails and hands, some even painted their body. This kind of body arts also can be found in Middle East. In Indonesia and Malaysia where most of Malay live, the girls and young women used henna to replace the function of nail polish and also for giving brown or red effect in their hair. On cultural events, some men painted their body when performed folk and war dances. Commonly, people in Asia used henna plant and only in big cities used henna powder.
To make sure you used the natural henna, you can recognize from the color and smell. Green color and vegetable smell are recognized as natural henna. But, black or dark gray henna should be careful and need to ask the contents to the sellers.
