Tips for the hair salon experience

You’ve done it. You’ve booked your appointment at the salon, the date has finally arrived, you may have even told your friends and family that you’re getting a new ‘do’ and now you’re raring to go!

Here’s 7 things to consider before stepping into the bright lights of your chosen salon…

1. Booking The Appointment – A week in advance is usually a good time to book an appointment. A sudden rushed trip to the salon during your lunch break or after a stressful day at work is not wise. A week also gives you time to prepare some details for the stylist on how you’d like your hair to look. If it’s a busy time, maybe before a national holiday or before summer vacations start, then two weeks in advance would be better. Also remember to ask how much the hair cut or color will cost when booking.

2. Special Occasions – If your new hairstyle is for a special occasion, say a wedding? vacation? special date? Then make sure you book your appointment the day before. This way you can attend that special event with your new style still ‘salon fresh’!

3. Weather – Check an accurate weather report before booking your appointment, rain can ruin a perfect style (but using the right styling products can minimize this), wind is also a problem as it blows your lovely layered style all over your face. If you have to attend the salon in bad weather conditions make sure you have an umbrella, coat/jacket with a loose hood – no hats though!

4. Food and Drink – You get offered drinks at salons, but rarely offered food – perhaps pop in to your favorite coffee shop before your appointment and get something to eat whilst you’re there – appointments can take from 30 minutes to two hours or more, depending on what you’re going for. If you know you’re going to be in the salon for a long while, perhaps schedule your appointment after a large breakfast or filling lunch. Take a small snack with you to the salon (you never know!).

5. What To Wear – This depends on whether you’re getting your hair cut or colored. If you’re getting your hair cut, then I’d say smart casual is best, as once you leave the salon you will feel great, so dressing well too compliments a good cut. If your hair is being colored, then I would suggest the same as before, but take an old loose item of clothing (like a t-shirt) to wear over your nice clothes – hair dye can splash anywhere! Wearing old clothes will ruin the great feeling you get when you step out of the salon to show your new ‘do’ to the world!
