Should you go gray naturally or dye your hair as you age?
Last Saturday a friend and I had a conversation about gray hair, more specifically whether or not we had any. I should start this by saying that I am in no way a gray hater, I have no intention of dying my hair when my time comes. I think on some women gray or white hair is actually very stunning. (Now of course my opinion could change if I am NOT one of those women who look good gray.) I’m not a hippie who believes Au Natural is always best, it just happens that for me natural is usually best, for a whole slew of different reasons-the largest being that I am about as low maintenance as a women gets.

According to Wikipedia “On average, 50% of white people are 50% gray by age 50. Their average age for the first gray hair is age 34 +/- 10 years. ”
So basically what this says is you could start at 24 or at 44 or hell we don’t really know,
My paternal grandmother was married at 18 and was white-completely-in her wedding picture. My mother at 61 isn’t all there yet. So heredity for me doesn’t seem to have a real play in this.
Certain genetic, hormonal and environmental conditions do however and it seems as a person with hypothyroidism my hair will likely go white before gray-hey I can handle that.
So WHERE am I headed with all this mambo jumbo?
I donned tweezers this morning and pulled one white hair from the crown of my head. More because I was curious and wanted to examine it then for vanity sake. It was short,as if it had been broken off from the rest of my long hair and course, very course and VERY white.
And it led me to wondering at 32 does that make me above or below average?
You know it is all about bragging rights..”hey mom look I am ABOVE average-finally!” Should I go running to the pharmacy for dye? No need, I yanked that sucker.
Maybe I’ll have to rethink that when it grows back in.
