Short stories: Ballroom dance lessons

THE SECOND STEP

The quiet inside the cavernous space was shattered by the shrill of the

telephone’s ring.

“Social Rhythms Dance Studio, Tony speaking.”

“Hi, are you one of the dance teachers?”

“Yes, I manage the club and also teach,” Anthony Ventura answered.

“Well, I’m getting married next Saturday and want to be able to dance to

my wedding song,” she said.

After twenty years of teaching ballroom dancing, Tony was familiar with

the sound of urgency from brides. “Have you taken lessons before?” he asked.

“No,” she replied.

Tony glanced at the calendar. It was Thursday afternoon, nine days before the

wedding. “Okay, but I have to tell you that normally it takes six to eight

weeks to prepare an inexperienced couple to dance a wedding routine,” he

said.

“Yes, I’m sure but we have nine days so can we get started today?”

Tony ran his finger down the day’s schedule. “Okay, I have an opening

at 8:45 this evening. Can I put you in for that time?”.

“Yes, that’ll work,” she replied.

“May I have your names?” he asked.

“I’m Bernice Froman and my fianc is Mitch Heister”.

“All right, I’ll see you at 8:45 this evening. Please bring your music with you. Do

you know where we are located?” Tony asked.

“Yes

I do. Oh, by the way, there is something that you should be aware of.” There was a

Pause, then, “I only have one leg,” she said while ending the conversation .

Tony stood with phone in hand feeling at once both bewildered and challenged.

At 8:40 PM, a tall man with a salt and pepper pony tail and a much shorter

woman, walked into the club. She had black frizzy hair, John Lennon

glasses and a stressed “I’m in a hurry” facial expression. She also limped.
