Memoirs: My wedding – Part 1

The day dawned sunny and warm. It was the day of my wedding, the day that I had been waiting for, what seemed forever. It was August 25, 2001 and the wedding was at one p.m. I had a full morning planned with my mother. We were going to get our updo and my nails done. Of course, before that happened, I had to deal with a nervous father. He was worried, well, that is too strong of a word, and he was actually frantic, worrying about whether there would be enough chairs, whether the doors would be open and so forth. He was driving my mother and me nuts with his frantic worrying. I was glad when we left the house and I told my mother this as we were leaving. She agreed with me, with a roll of her eyes.

Later, after we returned from the updo salon, my relatives arrived, on my mother’s side, to help if they were needed. I had two of my cousins help me into my wedding clothes. I had the hose; I had to get into a strapless contraption that made me feel like I was in the Old South, and then the dress itself, with a hoop skirt. I loved the dress, but did not expect having to wear something like a corset. Uhhhh! They helped me into the living room where my uncle had arrived, offering to take me to the place where the wedding was to be, since he had a bigger van than my mother did, who had a small car. I climbed into the van and sat the best way that I could with the dress and the long train. He took me to the Gardens where the wedding was to take place and he took many pictures of me in different poses. The place was a small one and the only place that I could wait for the wedding to begin was in the restroom, where it seemed, at the time, everyone wanted to come to, when the guests started to arrive. I saw people that I had not seen in years though, so that was a good thing.

I had arranged for both my parents to walk me down the aisle, since both of them raised me and I felt that it was appropriate. The time came, the music started, and both walked me down the aisle to my future husband. My future husband was wearing a black and white tux with a tail and he looked handsome. It was also very hot outside, but the ceremony was in the shade at least and the reception would be inside where it was air conditioned. We said our vows to each other and kissed, before walking back up the aisle where more pictures were taken. We went inside and everyone came up to us and congratulated us. I was also happy to get inside so I could take off the heels that I had on and put on some pumps, because my feet were hurting. We walked around, talking to the ones who came and then we sat down so the toast could be made. Before we knew it, it was five p.m. and the thunderstorms that Florida is famous for had arrived. We stayed until the rains had ended and then we made our escape. We visited my grandfather who was in the hospital at the time, in our wedding gear and he was happy to see us. We then left and headed to a hotel for the night. And, that was our wedding.
