Humor: Weddings – Part 5

I was fiercely determined to have my second wedding completely different from the first. I mean after all, this was a second chance … it had to be nothing even remotely similar to the first.

It was outside, in September, on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan on Mackinac Island, Michigan. The same place where that schmoopy, schmaltzy, overly romantic movie “Somewhere In Time” starring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve was filmed. An omen perhaps? A sign?

In keeping with the quest for difference, it was a very small gathering of myself, my soon-to-be-husband, my father and his wife, and the Mayor of Mackinac to marry us. That was it.

As we all walked briskly through the very heavily wooded trail to the bluff, the atmosphere was lively and spirited. Dad kept muttering, “Are we almost there yet? Had I known we’d be hiking this far, I would’ve packed a lunch!” Dad’s wife nearly tripped on the sticks and twigs in her very narrow heels, and we could her barely audible cursing every few minutes.

When we finally reached the beautiful stone bluff, it was peaceful and serene with a gorgeous view. There were also blustering gale force winds. We huddled together to try to hear what the Mayor was saying, much of which was drowned out by the intensely whipping gusts. Sign language made it apparent when we were supposed to reply, and the ceremony progressed quickly. What few photos were taken by my father and I, were not album worthy since everyone’s updo was either sticking out in every direction, or painfully plastered in our eyes.

The next day we chose to do a bit of the non-traditional activities following our non-traditional wedding. We went to the Mackinac Island Fun House. The young men who took our tickets congratulated us, and since we were the only patrons, assured us a great scare. They weren’t kidding. There’s nothing quite like getting the beejeebers scared out of you on your honeymoon.

Shapes of things to come …
