How to do makeup for your wedding – Part 5

Which scenario is most appealing: $4,000 professional photography package where none of the pictures are good enough to keep or a $4,000 professional photography package where there are so many great pictures there is no way to choose only a few to keep? Don’t do your own make-up for your wedding unless you are a professional make-up artist. And even then, hire a co-worker. A professional make-up artist trained in photographically correct make-up will greatly enhance the wedding day experience.

Weeks, even months before the big day, find a reputable make-up artist known for his or her skill in photographically correct make-up and review his or her portfolio. If the work is consistently to your liking, ask for a consultation. These are often free but a small fee may be charged by established salons. A consultation should include a discussion of wedding colors, wedding dress, jewelry, updo style, time of day, venue for wedding and reception, and then a full make-up application, followed by a detailed written worksheet of colors used and placement with tips for skin care improvement leading up to the big day. Speak up at this time if any changes need to be made. However, it is extremely important to remember that this person is a professional and that his or her reputation is also on the line. A white dress, white veil, and sparkling jewelry will oftentimes overshadow and even wash out a bride when the camera flashes. Extra color artfully applied by the make-up artist will no longer look dramatic or overdone on film but will appear natural and fresh. Any extra color can be removed once the formal picture taking is over.

Also, having an artist with you will reduce one more stressor that is unnecessary on the wedding day. An experienced professional has great tips for those late night bridesmaids chats that left dark circles under your eyes, tricks for getting in the dress once the make-up is on, and even recommendations for making the entire bridal party look good on camera. And yes, that includes the sweet father-in-law’s shiny bald head.
