Many couples today become very creative when it comes to arranging the most important day of their lives. Some decide to have a traditional church wedding with a typical reception followed with dinner and dancing. But more and more are planning elaborate and much more personalized wedding ceremonies. Themed weddings are becoming popular, so much so that no two are exactly alike.

History lovers are likely to plan the day they become man and wife in a setting of their favorite historical period. And, luckily enough for them, they have thousands of years in which to choose. From Ancient Greece and Rome to Art Deco and Vintage 20th century, there are countless options available.

What the couple must mutually decide is what theme they want to use for their wedding and they must keep in mind the many things they will need to make their wedding perfect and believable for their guests. People shouldn’t need to be told the theme the couple chooses. The theme should be evident from the bride’s gown and headpiece down to the place card holders set on the tables at the reception. The location or setting of the wedding, the decorations, the music, the food, the invitations, and even the bride’s hairstyle must announce what they have chosen. And with the help of history books, documentaries, and websites, it is easy enough to find the information that is needed. The most important thing to do is research. Find out what kind of food was served during that time period, what the people wore and how they conducted their wedding celebrations. Keep in mind also the differences between the rich and poor classes during that era.

There are many popular themes that have become wedding favorites. The Medieval Ages rage from roughly 5 A.D. to the 14th century. Weddings in this era could include a King Arthur or Robin Hood theme, with swords and minstrels and banquet feasts. Quickly following that is the Renaissance ranging from the 14th century to the 17th century. There are many Renaissance Faires that can inspire couples with ideas on what to choose for their wedding. It might be possible to arrange to have their ceremony take place at the faire, or they can recommend vendors where they may purchase the necessary supplies The Elizabethan period are the years between 1558-1603 associated with the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and the Shakespearean years are from 1564 to 1616. With these time periods, there are many styles of dress to choose from and who could resist reciting a sonnet by William Shakespeare. Another time period to choose would be Ancient Rome from 9 B.C. to 5 A.D or Ancient Greece from 750 B.C. to 146 B.C.

Other time periods that could be used for historical wedding themes include Egyptian, Viking, American Colonial or American Revolution, Civil War, Regency, Gothic, Victorian, Edwardian, Vintage, Big Band, and Disco or Hippie. The 20th century was full of very interesting years to choose, from the 1920′s, the 1930′s, the 1940′s, the 1950′s, the 1960′s, the 1970′s, and even the 1980′s. Each of these decades had a distinct difference in culture, fashion, music, food, and entertainment. And it’s easier to research when all you need to do is ask your mother, grandmother, or great grandmother what she did for her wedding.

The most important thing is to choose the type of wedding that both of you will love and remember and cherish forever, since it is the new beginning of your life together.
