Historical period wedding theme ideas – Part 2

Planning a wedding theme with a historical atmosphere can be a challenging, but not impossible matter. First you will need to do a little research on the time era you wish to re-enact at your wedding. Take notes of important details or things that interest you as you read. These little notes may be later referred to when planning your decor or clothing for the wedding. The most popular era’s for a historical wedding are Victorian, Shakespearian and even Ancient Rome and Greece!

There is no need to make your wedding exactly the same as what one would have been like in the past era, but rather incorporate the details into your wedding decor, dress and foods. This will make your reception and ceremony stand out from others you may have attended in the past and maybe teach others something about our history!

What is more important to your wedding than the attire? Search bridal shops to find a dress unique to the era that you will be incorporating into your wedding. Keep in mind that in the past era’s, dresses were often made of deep rich colors such as burgundy and green. Possibly an empire style gown for you with a pre-hippie style or a lacy dress with a swept up hair style for the bride, with the groom adorned in a stylish suit? Most places will work with you to find exactly what you are looking for. With this taken care of, you could ask your guests to dress in the time period clothing as well; but you may not wish to ask this. Either way, your point will get across.

Once you have the clothing chosen, you need to begin looking at locations. The possibilities are endless. If you want to be wed in a church, look for one that is built of stone, plenty stained glass windows and wooden accents. If you are looking into renting a hall for your wedding it may be more difficult to set your era. You can improvise with lots of ivy, scrolls, family crests, large flower baskets and chunky wooden candle holders will help set you up. If at all possible you could look into having your wedding at a Renaissance fair in your community, which would than provide you with all the decor and supplies needed.

Flowers seem to really set the scene of any wedding, and the uniqueness of a historical wedding is the usage of herbs. Rosemary, thyme and basil were often combined with flowers leading to the belief in mystical and religious views of health and destiny. Colors of flowers are very close to the same as the cloth colors used for the dress. These include red, orange, purple and greens found in flowers such as roses, holly branches and parrot tulips. The bride’s bouquet should be very large and free flowing. Oddly enough, wheat was commonly used with flowers to portray fertility, so you should be sure to include some in your bouquets.

Invitation are sent out to your guests to invite them to your ceremony. You should look for an antique style paper such as parchment paper that looks washed out. Color-wise you should stick with ivory or beige with fancy calligraphy in black for the wording. Sealing your envelopes can be done in an assortment of ways. My two favorite suggestions are rolling your invites into a scroll and sealing with a gold ring or else sealing with a gold sticker or for more era fitting a dollop of wax.

Your wedding day, is meant to be your day of pampering. Don’t let yourself get too caught up with planning, but have fun doing it. If you wish, hire a wedding planner to work with you to get the delicate setting of your era to be perfect!
