Groomsman attire ideas for a casual wedding
Groomsman attire for a casual wedding can be anything from fun and quirky to traditional in a more laid-back sense than the more formal tuxedo. In my own Scotch-Irish wedding, the groomsmen were going to wear tuxedo jackets and shirts with kilts, but we ended up at the last minute going with something much more casual. The kilts were not delivered (we married four days after 9/11, planes had been grounded and FedEx was severely disrupted) and we were not fazed. Instead of kilts, our groomsmen wore khaki shorts with their tuxedo jackets. It was fun and spontaneous and I can honestly say that few brides have wedding photos quite like mine.
If you are having a themed wedding, say an ocean or beach theme, have the groomsmen wear lighter weight and lighter colored suits if you can’t let go of the idea of suits, or Hawaiian shirts and shorts if you really want to let your hair down. If you are having an afternoon wedding in a park, maybe they can still wear suits, even tuxes, but skip the ties. Some golf attire (leave the cleats at home) is even suited for the very casual afternoon wedding. Western themed weddings of course come with built-in wardrobes and the choices for menswear in such instances depend on the level of formality. Western style suits and bolo ties with matching cowboy hats make for memorable photos if they are suited to your particular party.
Brides and grooms have as much choice in the matter of groomsman attire as they do for bridesmaids if they exercise a little creativity. If your groomsmen have wildly different personalities, it may be best to pick a few different ensembles that have one or two similar pieces in them and let them choose which they would wear. Gone are the boring days of matching tux, cummerbund, tie, and flowers, except for the most formal of weddings.
The choice of attire for your groomsmen should be made with the overall tone of the wedding in mind, as well as the time, season, and comfort of said groomsmen. If you ask them to wear heavy black suits in an outdoor wedding in the middle of a late August afternoon, they may not thank you for it.
