Commentary: Celebrity gossip magazines

While standing in the grocery store check out line these past few weeks I’ve seen some pretty absurd headlines plastered on the front covers of magazines.
Here are just a few:
“Britney Goes Bald”
“Britney In A Mental Hospital”
“Hilary Attacks Bill’s Secret Lover”
“Oprah Drunk Driving Shocker”
“Who’s Jessica Really Dating”
Ridiculous sure, but these magazines keep selling. It’s human curiosity that has brought society to this point. The public can blame the magazines, the paparazzi, or even the stars themselves. But the reality is that the public has a huge interest in the lives of the rich and famous. It’s the public that purchases the magazines, watches the latest news, and can’t wait to find out what Britney Spears will do next. If the public didn’t care then there would be no market, and the slightest move by a celebrity wouldn’t cause a media frenzy.
If you take a look around, you will see the same amount of gossip going on in our everyday lives. Neighbors peeking over fences, friends gossiping, cars slowing down to see an accident, the only difference is these events aren’t important enough to be broadcast to the world. Which shows the importance that we place upon the stars. We value them to the point that everything in their lives becomes interesting to us. Frankly I don’t think I could handle being that interesting. It actually makes me think that fame and fortune isn’t all that fabulous after all. I couldn’t imagine living a life where my latest hairstyle made the news, and helicopters were part of my wedding ceremony. Maybe living a peaceful existence is the real luxury. Forget the champagne and caviar, perhaps it’s being anonymous that’s one of the finer pleasures in life.
