Bridesmaid dress ideas for a casual wedding

Casual weddings are wonderful for tons of reasons-you’re not stuck adhering to stuffy traditions, for one. This can be especially liberating when you are dressing your bridal party.

It used to be that many women dreaded being named bridesmaids, largely because they were asked to purchase an extremely expensive dress that many of them would never wear again. Bridesmaid’s dresses are notorious for looking good on a very limited audience, mainly girls that women with actual curves would feel no guilt about sitting them down and force feeding them french fries and icecream until they no longer resemble sticks. These women can wear pretty much anything, but women of the human variety have long been pretty luckless when it comes to elaborate satin and taffeta monstrosities that we call bridesmaid dresses.

The best part of picking out dresses for a casual wedding is that your friends will likely be able to wear them again, since they aren’t generally going to be so fancy that your bridesmaids where them once, and the dresses spend the rest of their lonely existences gathering dust in a closet. However, you still want the dresses to be beautiful and help create the feel you are trying to achieve on your wedding day. The following are a few pieces of advice from a bride (me) who is planning a casual wedding (and yes, my bridesmaids, to my knowledge, are pretty happy).

1. LOSE THE LENGTH

Your bridesmaid’s dresses do not need to be floor-length. Tea length dresses are especially in style now, and they add a fun, light-hearted feel to your wedding. Bridesmaids will be happy since they can wear them later to semi-formal events. Plus, most girls like to show a little leg.

2. TRY MIX AND MATCH SEPERATES

Gone are the days when bridesmaids had to look like back-up singers, with matching dresses, hairstyles, shoes, and even fingernail polish. Give your girlfriends freedom to pick a style that flatters their bodies, and they’ll love you forever. As long as you designate one similar color family, letting your bridesmaids experiment with seperate tops is a great way to take formality down a notch and let each girl express herself. You want your nearest and dearest to feel confident and sexy if you’re asking them to parade down an aisle and stand up in front of an entire room.

3. EXPERIMENT WITH FABRIC

Lighter fabrics work best for casual weddings. If your wedding is outside Cor on the beach, as many casual weddings are, you don’t want your bridal party to be sweating the entire time. Choose a light fabric such as silk or even cotton. Dress for comfort as well as style.

4. CHOOSE A FUN COLOR

Classic black or the highly popular chocolate brown are great choices for formal weddings, but for a casual wedding, try something bright and fun, like fuschia, orange, or green. If you’re not bold enough to go bright, choose a pretty pastel, such as light yellow or soft aqua, which can also paint a pretty but casual picture.

5. STAY AWAY FROM ELABORATE DETAILS

The bows, the beads, and the lace have all got to go. To keep your look clean and casual, don’t get too caught up in details. Intricate adornments are better suited for formal weddings. Besides, you don’t want your bridesmaid’s dresses to detract from your own dress, so keep it simple. If you’re in love with a style with a bow at the hip or a ribbon across the waist, go for it; just don’t combine bows (or any accent) with other excessive adornments.

Following this advice should help you achieve a polished but fun look perfect for your casual wedding day. Not only will everyone look great, they’ll thank you for letting them express themselves and avoiding “One Time Only” Bridesmaid’s Dress Syndrome.
